How to Stay Safe on Icy Roads

Sometimes, no matter how careful you are, your vehicle may start sliding on a slippery road in winter. Instead of panicking, you can take the following measures to help prevent you from getting into an accident.

First of all, drive more slowly. This is the single most important thing you can do when driving in snowy and icy conditions. The higher your speed is, the more likely you will start sliding and the more difficult it will be to correct that slide.

Often, sliding can occur even when you are traveling quite slowly. When this happens, don't hit the brakes. Instead, turn into the direction of the slide to help right your vehicle. Avoid overcorrecting the slide by turning your wheel slowly. Overcorrecting can also result in an uncontrollable vehicle that will cause an accident. Once you are out of the slide, apply your brakes slowly to stop.
